5 Things to Know Before Booking Your Alps Elopement Photographer

Last Updated: August 19, 2025 | Published On: August 19, 2025

Planning an elopement in the Alps is exciting, but it can also feel overwhelming. Between choosing a location, deciding when to go, and figuring out the logistics of getting married abroad, it’s easy to feel stuck before you even get started. The good news? You don’t need to have it all figured out before reaching out to a photographer. In fact, connecting with the right Alps elopement photographer early on can give you clarity, confidence, and the support you need to start shaping your adventure.

This guide is the the top five things I think couples need to know before booking their Alps elopement photographer.

You don’t have to have it all figured out before scheduling a consultation call, or even booking

There is a lot of information online about how to elope, but the truth is, it can be overwhelming. I have spoken to countless couples who were feeling lost and stuck, or even apologized in their inquiry form for being fuzzy on the details. It’s completely normal to feel this way, and speaking to an elopement professional often gives couples the confidence to take the next steps forward.

So, if you don’t quite yet know…

  • Where you want to elope (even in terms of a country!)
  • When you want to elope
  • What you want to do during your elopement
  • or any of the other details

That’s totally ok!

While you may not walk away from a consultation call with your entire adventure planned (I have a thorough, tailored process I walk all my booked couples through for that), you will know you have someone on your side ready to help you each step of the way.

Reaching out to a photographer with planning assistance will make your experience that much easier, and can even help you avoid planning pitfalls early in the process.

Hiring a local Alps photographer or Alps photo + video team can make all the difference

Many couples choose to elope because they’re looking for a stress-free wedding experience. One way to eliminate stress is to hire someone who is not only experienced but also knows the Alps well. Even if your specific location is completely new to the photographer, general local expertise of a region still influences a lot of the planning process.

An experienced Alps photographer or photo + video team can help provide:

Great Vendor Suggestions.

As an American living in the Alps, I have English-speaking vendor suggestions I share with all of my booked couples, so hiring a hair and makeup artist, florist, or celebrant can be a simple, seamless process, even if you’re coming from abroad.

In-depth location knowledge.

After living and working in the Alps for over five years, I know the best-hidden spots, incredible vistas, and off-the-beaten-path locations that won’t be found on any major blog roundup. That way, you can celebrate in privacy. I also understand the unique cable car and mountain hut logistics that are unique to this area and help advise my couples on each of these details.

Weather familiarity + knowledge of seasonal conditions.

I know when trails and mountain passes typically become accessible, how and where to pivot when there’s ‘’bad’’ weather, and all the nuances associated with the region I work in. I’ve seen many non-local photographers suggest inaccessible locations that are in deep snow to their couples, since they aren’t familiar with the local weather patterns. I’ve also seen people say a location is accessible via driving when it’s only a hiking trail. Hiring local helps mitigate this.

Expertise in permits and regulations.

If you want to hold an environmentally friendly wedding that respects the area, hiring local is key. Ideally, your local photographer will respect location closures, know the ins and outs of drone usage, and more.

Be sure to view full gallery examples of *real* weddings and elopements

Before working with any Alps photographer or videographer, make sure you’ve looked at a few full galleries or films from real weddings and elopements.

Real Alps elopement and wedding galleries are important to look at because:

You can get a better feel of a photographer’s true style.

Instagram or an online portfolio typically only showcase highlight images, but a full gallery can reveal consistency across the entire day.

You can see how they handle different lighting scenarios.

From sunny mid-day light to rainy days or sunrise and sunset, looking at a few full galleries will help you understand how their editing style and creativity shine in a variety of conditions.

Candid vs. posed or directed moments.

Full galleries reveal how much a photographer focuses on spontaneous emotion versus directed shots and whether they strike a balance that fits what you’re looking for.

A word about styled shoots and AI-generated images

Real wedding and elopement galleries are also important to look at, because some photographers may only advertise styled shoots on their website or social media. Styled shoots are events that photographers and videographers create, or pay to go to with hired models, and often aren’t reflective of what real weddings and elopements are like. Additionally, with the rise of AI, we’ve seen some photographers advertise with fake images.

Seeing real, full galleries helps you feel confident that who you are booking will do your day justice and has the experience to prove it.

Longer coverage and more locations don’t equate a better experience

Every couple’s elopement day vision is unique and should be crafted with a tailored approach. While we don’t offer adventures shorter than 4-8 hours, as I find less is often too rushed, we also don’t believe every couple needs multi-day coverage to have a great experience. We’ve personally found trying to fit in too many locations or activities isn’t the best option for most couples. Trying to do too much can create challenges when the weather isn’t ‘’perfect’’ and you need to pivot plans.

Part of having a fun, stress-free experience means having the time to enjoy where you are. Whether it’s sharing snacks along the trail, stopping at a mountain hut for ice cream, taking a dip in an alpine lake, or having time to look up at the stars, the best gift you can give yourself is time.

Some of our favorite elopements to capture have taken place on a single hiking trail with multiple types of scenery to enjoy and celebrate at.

One thing longer elopements are great for is overnight adventures that include a mountain hut stay in the Alps. These experiences put you in the perfect place to stargaze, enjoy a secluded sunrise or sunset location in privacy, and have an experience that’s unique to the Alps. If you aren’t familiar with huts in the Alps, don’t be put off by the word ‘’hut’’. Many of these huts offer private double rooms, running water, and great food, all while being in an epic location.

Should I hire an elopement photographer or an elopement planner?

In the early stages of planning your wedding, you may come across elopement photographers who offer planning assistance. You’ll also find elopement planners, or photographers who work alongside a designated planner.

As an Alps elopement photographer who offers planning assistance, I help guide every couple through the process of eloping. This includes customized location help, vendor and activity suggestions to enhance your day, timeline building, and more. From start to finish, we are co-creating your one-of-a-kind experience. On the day of your elopement, I’ll be keeping track of time, sharing fun facts about the region, and capturing every exciting detail of your adventure so you can just enjoy the day.

On the flip side, if you work with an elopement planner, they’ll generally work on booking a venue if you need one (this is mostly applicable for micro weddings), they can book other vendors for you, and also organize activities such as hiring and communicating with a helicopter company or a private chef.

99% of the couples I work with opt to take a hands-on approach, and prefer the simplicity of working with just a photographer who offers planning assistance. When working with a planner, there can occasionally be more back-and-forth/communication to manage, and, for some couples, they’ve found their experience begins to feel more like a production.

While the choice is yours, the main times I recommend hiring a planner are for micro weddings or helicopter elopements, as both of these require more day-of coordination.
