25 of the Best Places to Get Married and Elope in the German Alps [Updated for 2026]

Last Updated: February 9, 2026 | Published On: January 16, 2025

As an American elopement photographer living and working in Germany’s Bavarian Alps, one of the biggest questions couples ask is, ‘’Where’s the best place to get married in the German Alps?’’.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, there isn’t a ‘’best place to get married in German Alps’’, because there isn’t a one-size-fits-all location. Every couple has a different vision of how they want to spend their day.

The blog you’ll find here, ‘’25 The Best Places to Get Married and Elope in the German Alps’’, is designed to be a jumping-off point as you start planning your Bavarian Alps wedding. In it, you’ll get a better idea of the incredible location possibilities the German Alps hold, so you don’t want to miss it!

If you want in-depth help with planning your Germany elopement, that’s something I do for all of my couples.

I help my booked couples:

  • Find their dream location (and as a local, I have lots of lesser known spots up my sleeve)
  • Create personalized timelines that reflect what they want out of their adventure wedding
  • Suggest English-speaking vendors such as HMUAs, florists, celebrants, etc.
  • Oh, and not to mention you’ll get my full photography services, and the option to add on videography

Eloping in Garmisch-Partenkirchen

Garmisch-Partenkirchen, located just over an hour south of Munich is the best place to elope in the German Alps. Whether for a two-person adventure, or a destination micro wedding, this mountain town has so much to offer. Garmisch-Partenkirchen has numerous cable cars to whisk up quickly up mountain tops year-round, boasts great places to stay, and plenty of fun outdoor activities (hiking, swimming, skiing/snowboarding, paragliding).

Whether you want an easy access location, or something more involved and off-the-beaten path, Garmisch-Partenkirchen is stunning. Due it’s close proximity to the Austrian Alps (just 20 minutes to the border), you could also easily plan a two-country elopement!

You can check out our full guide to planning a mountain wedding or elopement in Garmisch-Partenkirchen here.

Eibsee Elopements

Germany’s most famous alpine lake, the Eibsee, is a popular elopement destination near Garmisch-Partenkirchen year-round. For a full breakdown of what you need to know to elope there, you can check out our Eibsee Elopement Guide here.

Zugspitze Weddings

The Zugspitze is another well-known wedding destination in Garmisch-Partenkirchen since it’s the tallest mountain in the German Alps, and there’s a cable car to the top. We don’t typically recommend eloping at the Zugspitze, due to the frequent high winds and clouds shrouding the summit. Instead, we suggest take advantage of the lower altitude cable cars that offer sweeping views of the taller summits.

Eloping in Mittenwald

Mittenwald, Germany is a quaint, picturesque town perfect for your elopement. Just 20 minutes from Garmisch-Partenkirchen, the village is surrounded by massive peaks, and borders one of the largest nature parks in the area, the Karwendel Naturpark. Mittenwald offers a great mix of rolling green hills, craggy summits, and small mountain lakes. We like Mittenwald especially during the spring and fall shoulder seasons. It’s also easy to combine locations in Mittenwald with other spots in Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

Eloping in Berchtesgaden National Park

Berchtesgaden National Park offers some of the most diverse mountain scenery found in the Alps, and is another stunning destination for Germany elopements. This region boasts sparkling lakes, fjord-lake valleys, and adventure for all activity levels.

With that being said, Berchtesgaden National Park can get busy, so we recommend it most to eloping couples wanting to hike or overnight in a mountain hut so that you to enjoy easy access cable car spots after hours. May and October are great times to beat some of the crowds, while still having plenty to do during the off-season.

Eng Alm Elopements

While technically in Austria, Eng Alm is one of the most idyllic mountain elopement locations in the Alps, and is home to some of the most breathtaking scenery out there. Eng Alm has made my best places to elope in Germany list, because the only way to access it is by driving through Germany (the valley doesn’t connect to any part of Austria by car).  The narrow valley carved between the tall Karwendel mountains is in the heart of a nature reserve, and is famous for its cheese (the aged Enger Ahornkönig cheese is something I dream about, it’s truly that good).

While every elopement location in Eng Alm requires a moderate hike to access, if you’re up to the challenge, I really cannot recommend it enough. The tall summits contrasting against sweeping high alpine pastures, and a chance to find the elusive Edelweiss flowers in the wild is hard to beat. There are also some spectacular mountain huts for overnight elopement adventures. Since Eng Alm is a place we love dearly, we are offering our two-day elopement package for our full-day rates. You can contact us here to schedule a call and get more info.

Füssen Weddings

Füssen, Germany is popular for elopements due to its close proximity to Schloss Neuschwanstein, the castle Disney used as inspiration. Füssen is home to more than just castles though – here, you’ll find opportunities to go sailing on mountain lakes, take a hot air balloon ride, or hike along one of the hundreds of trails in the area. If seeing the castles are high on your list, we recommend avoiding winter (when the main viewpoints are closed due to snow and ice), August (due to crowds), and always plan heading out first thing in the morning to beat the crowds.

Elope in Bad Hindelang

Bad Hindelang, nestled among Germany’s Allgäu mountain range, is ideal for eloping couples looking to tackle bigger hikes. This area can be slightly less crowded than other parts of the German Alps, since it’s two hours southwest of Munich with fewer easy train connections, compared to many other areas with direct trains and shorter commutes.

One of the most famous trails near Bad Hindelang, the Schrecksee, is considered the German Alps most beautiful mountain lake. We like to combine Bad Hindelang with some other secluded locations just 15 minutes over the border in Austria for a two-country adventure that prioritizes the best of the best. Our top tip – the flowers out here in June are magnificent!

Oberstdorf Elopements

Oberstdorf is another small mountain town surrounded by beautiful mountains in all directions and an ideal wedding destination in the German Alps. Year-round, Oberstdorf makes a great wedding location, whether it’s for skiing and snowboarding in the winter, or hiking and stargazing in the summer. A unique elopement activity in the German Alps is to overnight in a traditional mountain hut, which is best described as a large cabin that offers overnight accommodation, food, and drinks. Oberstdorf has some especially great mountain hut locations, thanks to its close proximity to the  Allgäuer Hochalpen Nature Reserve (Allgäu High Alps), and some popular hut-to-hut hikes found there.

Oberstdorf, like Bad Hindelang, is less crowded than some other parts of the German Alps, since it’s over two hours from Munich and slightly harder to access via public transportation.

Getting married at the Tegernsee

Tegernsee, Germany, is a popular mountain town for couples to get married in, thanks to its easy access from Munich (less than an hour), picturesque landscape with a waterfront view, and numerous wellness spas. Tegernsee is an especially ideal location for micro weddings, due to its variety of scenic small wedding venue options. One spot you can’t miss is the cable car ride up to the Wallberg (mountain) which has a serene chapel at the top and gorgeous views in both summer and winter.

Do I need a permit for my German Alps elopement location?

Typically, no!

With that being said, there is some nuance. Most outdoor locations don’t require a formal permit for an elopement ceremony. However, if you’re planning a larger gathering (8 or more people), getting married on private property (ie, next to a hut, villa, farmer’s property, etc.) you may need to obtain permission.

Beyond permits, it’s important to consider other factors like respecting the natural environment and leaving no trace. Some locations may have restrictions on the use of drones, amplified music, or can only accommodate a few people due to fragile alpine areas.

Despite popularity on social media, it is actually illegal to walk on these meadows from April 1st-September 30th each year.

Germany Elopement Location Rules and Restrictions

While choosing where to elope in the German Alps, here are a few rules and restrictions to keep in mind:

Protected Nature Areas: The Bavarian Alps are home to dozens of protected nature and wildlife preserves. While many of these are perfectly fine to elope at, other spots you actually can’t get married at most of the year, despite growing popularity on social media. For example, the pictured meadows here are restricted from April 1st to September 30th. These meadows (and many similar ones) are protected due to the unique biodiversity of plants and bugs they provide, and are of significant geological significance. Please choose elopement vendors who will respect these nature protections.

Drones: Similar to the point above, there are drone restrictions in Germany, and across the Alps. Nearly all nature-protected areas are no-fly zones. Most no-fly zones aren’t listed on the DJI app, so photographers and videographers must do their due diligence to research restrictions. The very popular Eibsee and Schloss Neuschwanstein, for example, are strict, no-fly zones. Permits are not granted to shoot there. We always recommend choosing a videographer who can make a great film, regardless of drone photography so you can put your focus on selecting a location based on scenery, accessibility, and privacy first. We offer both photography and videography services in the Bavarian Alps.

These two websites are especially helpful (and need to be cross-referenced) to find out about no-fly zones.

How do I access my elopement location in the Bavarian Alps?

The most common form of transportation for Bavarian Alps locations are via cable car, or hiking. Cable cars (often referred to as ‘’bahns’’ in Germany) are found in just about every mountain town. Cable cars typically run from about 9 am to 5 pm, making them perfect for mid-day adventures. With cable car accessible spots, we recommend taking trails 15-20 minutes away from the top, so you have a better chance at privacy and seclusion.

Couples dreaming of a sunrise or sunset elopement have a couple of options. The simplest is to stick to the valley which have locations you can get to with a short walk (often good for mountain lakes). If you’re envisioning a mountain top, your best bet is to hike or stay overnight in a cable car-accessible mountain hut.

Should I book a venue for my wedding in the German Alps?

For elopements with fewer than eight people involved, you generally don’t need to book a venue to hold your ceremony. If you’d like to set up chairs or decorations, or involve more people, we highly suggest securing a small venue for your wedding in the German Alps.

Unlike in some parts of the world, venues in the Bavarian Alps are often well suited for small groups, and frequently situated in stunning alpine  scenery. We’ve seen hiking-accessible only venues, such as the Rohrkopfhütte in Schwangau, and there are countless mountain huts accessed via cable car that double as venues.

How much does a wedding venue cost in the German Alps?

While pricing fluctuates, you can generally expect to spend between €400-€1000 for a few-hour rental, which may include help with basic setting up, drinks, or light appetizers after the ceremony.
