Oeschinensee Elopement Guide (Updated for 2025/2026)

Last Updated: November 18, 2025 | Published On: November 18, 2025

The Oeschinensee has been one of Switzerland’s most popular elopement destinations for a number of years, and it’s not hard to see why. Many couples I’ve worked with have loved the Oeschinensee for its towering peaks, sparkling blue water, the rowboats, and beautiful hiking. As one of the leading elopement photographers in Switzerland and the Alps, I’ve written this mini-guide to help clear up exactly what you need to know about eloping at the Oeschinensee.

Can I get married and elope at the Oeschinensee?

No, couples cannot get married and elope at the Oeschinensee as of 2024 onward. The Oeschinensee is dealing with mass overtourism, leading to environmental degradation. The cable car operators and local landowners request that couples and photographers respect these rules, the community, and the environment by getting married elsewhere.

You may be wondering why I’m writing and publishing a guide about eloping at the Oeschinensee, when it’s currently prohibited. The truth is, I’m writing this so hopefully Google can spread the word and make the information more accessible to both couples and other photographers about the major updates that have occurred recently. For years, the Oeschinensee was a popular elopement location with many, and the updated information isn’t easy to find if you don’t know what you’re looking for.

If you want helpful tips for great alternative elopement locations in Switzerland, feel free to skip to this section of the blog, alternatives to the Oeschinensee. You can also check out my guide on the 25+ best places to elope in Switzerland.

On the Oeschinensee FAQ page you can find the following information under these two sections:

  •  ‘’Are events such as weddings or similar permitted in the Oeschinensee area? No, Oeschinensee is located in the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage Site and is surrounded by various protected areas, including plant conservation areas, dry meadows and wildlife rest areas. Due to these special protective measures, all (commercial) events and drone flights are prohibited by law. Compliance with these rules is monitored by rangers.”
  • ‘What outdoor guidelines apply when dealing with social media? Only post activities that are permitted. Publishing prohibited activities can have legal consequences. Remember that content on the internet remains visible for a long time. Only publish photos, videos or quotes on websites and social media from people who have expressly given you their consent to do so (personal rights). Commercial photo shoots are also not permitted at Oeschinensee .”

Please note, any type of photo sessions, which may include: influencing, couples photography, elopements, weddings, or other paid work, is considered commercial work and is not allowed as of 2024.

Also, please note, elopements are currently banned at Oeschinensee, even if it is only the couple without guests. If you’d like a copy of the most recent email chain I’ve exchanged with locals over this decision, let me know, and I’d be happy to share it with you privately.

Because I have to write for Google, there’s some additional information I need to include, so hopefully Google can pick up this information and put it on Page 1 where it belongs. The information below was relevant when eloping at the Oeschinensee was legal.

Why the Oeschinensee is a great elopement location

The Oeschinensee makes one of the best locations to get married at, because simply put, this location isn’t hard to get to, but offers just about every type of scenery you could ask for. You can access the Oeschinensee via a cable car. From the lake, you have numerous options to explore further if you’d like to hike longer, or hang out at the lake and enjoy the views. The Oeschinensee also makes a great spot for a hiking micro wedding in Switzerland.

How to Elope at the Oeschinensee

You elope at the Oeschinensee by visiting via cable car and a short hike, or by hiking a few miles from the valley to the lake.

When to Elope at the Oeschinensee

You can elope at the Oeschinensee in all four seasons. During the winter, I suggest going during January or February when the cable car is operating, and you’re most likely to experience a snowy wonderland. In Spring, the Oeschinensee becomes accessible again toward the end of May. From spring onward, you can easily elope at the Oeschinensee anytime through mid-October.
