Lauterbrunnen Weddings and Elopements | A Complete Planning Guide [Updated for 2026]
Last Updated: February 10, 2026 | Published On: February 10, 2026
Lauterbrunnen is one of the most sought-after locations in Switzerland for elopements and intimate mountain weddings. Nestled in the heart of the Swiss Alps, this dramatic valley is known for its towering cliffs, lush green meadows, and storybook village charm. With 72 waterfalls cascading down the mountainsides, it’s easy to see why so many couples choose Lauterbrunnen for their Switzerland wedding or elopement.
It was one of the first places I visited in Switzerland over 11 years ago, a few years before I made the Alps my permanent home, and it will always mean something special to me.
That said, after years of living and photographing elopements in the Alps, I’ve come to know countless other equally breathtaking (and often less crowded) places to get married.
In this guide, I’m sharing my experience: the best Lauterbrunnen elopement locations, activity ideas, places to stay, and honest advice to help you decide whether this valley, or somewhere just as stunning but more secluded, is the right fit for your wedding.
Elopement & Wedding Locations in Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland
Here are some of the best and most popular places to get married in Lauterbrunnen and the surrounding area. You can check out more of the Best Places to Elope in Switzerland here.

The Lauterbrunnen Church
The Lauterbrunnen Church (officially the Reformierte Kirche Lauterbrunnen), is the most popular wedding photo location in valley. With the cliffs on either side, towering over both the church and village, it’s quite scenic. The best viewpoint is from a walking path leading up to the church. Please be respectful of the locals by staying on the path, as it borders private property on either side. It’s not uncommon to see a small line of people waiting to take a photo with this classic view, making it an unsuitable ceremony location.

Wildflower Meadows in Lauterbrunnen
Many couples dream of getting married in Lauterbrunnen’s iconic wildflower meadows and have their “Sound of Music” moment.
But those fields aren’t just pretty backdrops. They’re working farmland, carefully maintained by local families and used to grow food for their animals. Stepping into or sitting in these meadows can damage the land, and many are roped off or part of private property.
The good news? There are ways to experience these landscapes responsibly. With proper permission from landowners, often arranged for a fee, it’s possible to access certain areas respectfully. I’m always happy to help coordinate this so your day feels magical while honoring the people who call this valley home.

Wengen – The Cliffs Above Lauterbrunnen
Some of the most popular viewpoints of Lauterbrunnen are actually above the valley in the village of Wengen, a car-free town accessed via cogwheel train. Here, sweeping meadows overlook the dramatic cliffs below. The panorama is stunning.
Many of the meadows in Wengen are privately owned farmland. Access typically requires permission from the landowners, often arranged for a fee. I’m always happy to help coordinate this so everything is handled respectfully and legally.
It’s also worth noting that a few locations that were once publicly accessible have been closed in recent years, so up-to-date local guidance makes a big difference.

Mürren and Gimmelwald
Mürren and Gimmelwald are two small villages located above Lauterbrunnen with both small wedding venues and elopement location options. Since the villages are car-free and can only be accessed via cable car, it’s a great place to go for peace and quiet. These make a great base for hiking elopements, too.
Männlichen
The Männlichen provides one of the best alpine views of Lauterbrunnen for a memorable wedding. From the top, you get a clear view of peaks towering over 4.000m (or 13,000+ feet), and on one side, you can look down at the dramatic cliffs into Lauterbrunnen.
Weddings and elopements at the Männlichen require minimal hiking, although there are numerous hiking trails you can connect for something unique. Due to the popularity of the area, we suggest couples plan an overnight elopement adventure at the Berghaus Männlichen. This mountain hotel is right near the top of the cable car, and the perfect place to enjoy sunrise, sunset, and stargazing.

Kleine Scheidegg
Kleine Scheidegg rests on a high plateau above Lauterbrunnen and is accessed via the Bernese Oberland Railway. This elopement location is ideal for couples who don’t mind hiking and want to be in a place that feels up close and personal with the towering summits. From Kleine Scheidegg, it’s not uncommon to even hear glaciers cracking on the mountain walls. Dozens of trails of varying difficulty can be accessed from this base, making it your potential perfect wedding spot.

Alternative and Private Lauterbrunnen Elopement Locations
If you love the vibe of Lauterbrunnen, but would prefer to elope somewhere less touristy and more off-the-beaten-path, here are some great alternative regions in Switzerland we’d love to help you elope at:
- Braunwald, Switzerland
- Engelberg, Switzerland
- Gstaad, Switzerland
- Walensee and the Appenzeller Alps, Switzerland

Wedding Venues in Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland
If you’re holding a micro-wedding or destination wedding in Lauterbrunnen, here are some venue options that can accommodate a variety of capacity sizes. Most venue options are not directly within Lauterbrunnen, but instead, in the nearby mountainside villages overlooking the valley.
Practical Lauterbrunnen Wedding & Elopement Planning Tips

How to Get to Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland
Lautbrunnen is fairly easy to get to, whether by car or public transportation.
Best Airports: We recommend couples getting married in Lauterbrunnen fly into the Zurich, Switzerland Airport. From Zurich, it’s about two hours by car, and 2.5 hours by train or bus.
Lauterbrunnen has plenty of walkable areas and is easy to get around via bus and train. Most of the surrounding mountainside villages such as Wengen, Mürren, and Gimmelwald are car-free and can only be accessed via train, cable car, or hiking.
Do You Need a Rental Car? If you’re sticking around Lauterbrunnen, you likely don’t need to book a rental car. Some couples find it more convenient, depending on what other mountainous regions they’re hoping to visit during their trip. One thing to keep in mind is how much luggage you have, and whether or not you can easily carry it on public transport.
Do I Need a Permit for my Lauterbrunnen Elopement Location?
It depends. Much of Lauterbrunnen and the surrounding area is privately owned farmland, so access often requires landowner permission, sometimes for a small fee. I’m happy to help coordinate this so your day run smoothly and we stay respectful of the locals.
For larger gatherings (usually 8+ people), you’ll likely need a small wedding venue. For hiking elopements, many locations do not require formal permits.
Even without permits, it’s important to respect the environment: leave no trace, follow all local restrictions. Many Lauterbrunnen locations also have drone restrictions. We want to help every couple have a beautiful and responsible wedding.
The Best Time to Get Married in Lauterbrunnen
Our favorite times to plan a mountain wedding in Lauterbrunnen are mid-June through early-October. In June, many of the wildflowers have begun blooming and continue through August. Summer is Lauterbrunnen’s most busiest season though. September and October to see fewer crowds, while also offering plenty to do.
We don’t recommend getting married in Lauterbrunnen in winter. Instead, we suggest Grindelwald, which gets more sunshine, and better ski access.
Lauterbrunnen is Small – Don’t Forget to Explore
Most couples don’t realize it, but the village of Lauterbrunnen is actually quite small. You don’t need to allot more than 1.5-2 hours to explore it. With that being said, there is so much to do up in the mountains *around* Lauterbrunnen. Be sure to explore beyond the valley during your wedding.
Local Guidance Can Go a Long Way
Having local guidance can make all the difference when planning your Lauterbrunnen wedding. Imagine arriving at a spot you’ve dreamed about, only to discover it’s not car-accessible, or worse, under construction. That actually happened in 2025, when the iconic Lauterbrunnen church was completely covered in scaffolding. We were able to avoid this, and instead, steer our couples to equally stunning alternatives.
Whether it’s securing permits, sharing hidden gems, or having someone who knows the valley inside and out, we’re here to help you plan a smooth elopement in Switzerland.
Activities for Your Lauterbrunnen Elopement
If there’s one thing Lauterbrunnen and the surrounding area has no shortage of, it’s fun activities for your wedding or elopement. I wholeheartedly believe your elopement is more than just a photoshoot, and implementing activities is the perfect way to create a memorable experience.

Lauterbrunnen Hiking Elopements
As a hiker at heart, Lauterbrunnen hiking elopements are always a treat. There are countless trails crisscrossing the mountains, and if you’re up for something bigger, there are ways to beat the crowds. Switzerland’s trail system is well-marked, so the only hard part is narrowing down which trail to explore!
Paragliding
Paragliding is one of our favorite adventure elopement activities, and Lauterbrunnen is one of the ideal places to do it. If you’ve ever wanted to see the mountains from above (without the expense of a helicopter ride) this is the way to kick off your experience in a one-of-a-kind way.
Climbing the Famed Via Ferrata Mürren-Gimmelwald
If you’re looking to add adventure to your mountain elopement, don’t miss hiring a guide and climbing the famed Via Ferrata from Mürren to Gimmelwald. It’s not for the faint of heart, but you’ll get to feel what it’s like scaling the sheer cliffside walls and cross narrow tightropes over some of the waterfalls.

Overnight at a Mountain Hut and Stargaze
Mountain huts and hotels are some of my favorite parts about the Alps for a variety of reasons. During your elopement, an overnight stay at a mountain hut allows you to:
- Enjoy secluded alpine locations at sunrise and sunset. Cable cars in the Alps generally operate between 9am-5pm, and overnight adventures in a hut or mountain hotel allow you to stay after hours.
- Go stargazing! In the summer, you can only see the stars from around midnight until 3 am, so staying in a mountain hut puts you in the perfect, convenient location to look up at the night sky. If this is something you know you’d like to do, let your photographer know so you can book the right date that will align closest to a new moon.
It’s worth noting, that many mountain huts are modern and up-to-date, offer private-double rooms, and may even have en-suite bathrooms. Huts and mountain hotels can range from rustic to even luxurious.

Wedding Helicopter Tours
Helicopter tours with glacier landings are an exciting way to get married year-round. The nearest base to Lauterbrunnen is about 25 minutes away in Interlaken. From here, you can be flown onto the Petersgrat, a high-altitude glacier in the Jungfrau region. At the top, you can enjoy food, champagne, and the amazing view.
Wedding Skiing and Snowboarding
Thinking of eloping in winter? Winter elopements in Lauterbrunnen can be experienced with 103km of groomed slopes ready to be explored. Across the Alps, you’ll find lift tickets to be significantly cheaper than in North America.
The Best and Most Unique Places to Stay for Your Lauterbrunnen Wedding or Elopement

Below you’ll find a collection of beautiful hotels you should consider staying at for your Lauterbrunnen wedding or elopement.

- Hotel Mürren Palace (Mürren)
- Hotel Edelweiss (Mürren)
- Hotel Regina (Wengen)
- Grand Hotel Belvedere, a Beaumier Hotel (Wengen)

Here’s what my couples have shared about working with me…

WOW! I could not have asked for a more perfect couple to work with for our wedding than Christine and Scott…
Both the photos and final video were MAGICAL!! Christine and Scott were truly able to capture exactly how our wedding felt in every moment. Everyone I share the photos/video with always gush about how beautiful everything is!! We couldn’t be happier to have worked with Christine and Scott and HIGHLY recommend them for anyone thinking of an elopement or mini wedding in the alps!!

‘’I cannot recommend Christine of Made in the Mountains Photo enough. It is because of her that we were able to celebrate our marriage in a way that felt perfectly us…Every single photo in our gallery was gorgeous. But in addition to her obvious talent as a photographer, she is just a lovely human being. Having her with us on our 2 day elopement was a joy. It was like having a friend by our side who legitimately cared about us and wanted us to have the most perfect celebration of love.
