Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, is one of the most idyllic mountain towns in the Alps for getting married. Nestled in a cozy valley surrounded by rolling meadows and towering peaks in every direction, the landscape makes for a simply breathtaking and memorable wedding or elopement in the Bavarian Alps.
This Garmisch-Partenkirchen wedding & elopement guide is crafted with my years of experience photographing weddings and elopements in the area. It also happens to be my home, so it’s written with a deep local knowledge of the region. Garmisch-Partenkirchen offers a wide variety of postcard-worthy views, from valley to mountain top. No matter where you go, you’re sure to be blown away by the scenery. Many of the wedding and elopement locations in Garmisch-Partenkirchen are accessed via cable car, cogwheel train, or a hike. Below you’ll find an overview of the top Bavarian Alps elopement and wedding locations in Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

Garmisch-Partenkirchen Elopement Locations
Zugspitze
The Zugspitze is well-known wedding destination in Garmisch-Partenkirchen since it’s the tallest mountain in the German Alps, and there’s a cable car to the top. The Zugspitze is rocky and rugged, offering sweeping views into four countries. If you want to get married at the highest spot in Germany, this is the place. Legal (civil) weddings are also possible atop the Zugspitze. However, we personally suggest taking advantage of the lower altitude cable cars that offer sweeping views of the taller summits for fewer crowds, better weather, and equally stunning views.
Eibsee
Germany’s most famous alpine lake, the Eibsee, is a gorgeous elopement location if you’re looking for a whimsical vibe. From a fairytale-like mossy forest to sparkling blue water and towering peaks, this location is so beautiful that it doesn’t even feel real.
Alpspitzbahn Cable Car
Atop the Alpspitze Cable Car (Alpspitzbahn), you can find some of the most stunning mountain elopement locations in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. From easy access to more involved hikes, every direction you look is a new panorama and layers of mountains in all directions. I love the variety you can get up here, and I know of several hidden gems accessed via this cable car. For a one-of-a-kind location, don’t overlook exploring this area.
Riessersee
This small alpine lake with a forested walking path around it, is a picturesque elopement location. We particularly recommend it during Spring and Fall, outside of the busy summer season.
Private Wedding & Elopement Locations in Garmisch-Partenkirchen
While Garmisch-Partenkirchen has numerous easy-access elopement locations, this area is a true paradise if you’re a hiker looking for a private elopement location. I’ve climbed nearly every mountain in the area (my summit tally is over 300!), and have so many spots I’d be stoked to document a couple looking for a one-of-a-kind elopement experience in the Alps.
Garmisch-Partenkirchen Wedding Venues
If you’re holding a micro-wedding or destination wedding in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, here are some venue options that can accommodate a variety of capacity sizes. The Kreuzjochhaus is one of the best venue options for mountain lovers. Located near the top of a cable car, you have an unobstructed view of the mountains, overnight accommodation, a gorgeous wellness area, on-site catering, and more. It would be a dream ‘’wedding weekend’’ location.
How to Get to Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany
Garmisch-Partenkirchen is easy to get to, thanks to public transportation.
Best Airports: You can reach Garmisch-Partenkirchen in about two hours via train from the Munich Airport. It takes just over an hour if you’re traveling by train from the Innsbruck, Austria Airport. Driving is even quicker.
Garmisch-Partenkirchen has plenty of walkable areas and is easy to get around via bus and train. For wedding couples, I do recommend renting a car, which will make the wedding day itself much easier. The remainder of your trip can easily be done via public transit.
Do I Need a Permit for my Garmisch-Partenkirchen Elopement Location?
Typically, no!
With that being said, there is some nuance. Most outdoor locations don’t require a formal permit for an elopement ceremony or elopement photos. However, if you’re planning a larger gathering (8 or more people), getting married on private property (ie, next to a hut, villa, farmer’s property, etc.) you may need to obtain permission.
Beyond permits, it’s important to consider other factors like respecting the natural environment and leaving no trace. Some locations may have restrictions on amplified music, or can only accommodate a few people due to fragile alpine areas. Many locations have drone restrictions, including the Eibsee.
The Best Time to Get Married in Garmisch-Partenkirchen
Garmisch-Partenkirchen is a mountain destination, so timing your elopement with your ideal scenery and activities is key. The best months to get married in Garmisch-Partenkirchen are January and February for winter elopements, and late May through mid-October for summer and autumn elopements.
